Use Case – Before

Before Scoop.it or Press.ly, the only way to share a story online was to copy and paste it, but of course the original author wanted credit for sharing it in the first place. Then every day I make a video that we post on Facebook and YouTube, “The Daily Big Cat,” covering the news of the day from around the world, and I read it through the Scoop.it feed. We have two people who manage 100 online volunteers and two people who manage 88 field volunteers who care for cats. So if anyone has a question, about a situation they saw recently at a local zoo, about how to report abuse, or about whether white tigers can be bred, our volunteers answer all such questions online. We believe that big cats don’t belong in cages, so we use Scoop.it and every other resource at our disposal to clarify why these cats should not be bred to live in captivity. CB: There are so many stories that people don’t want to read them all, so I make these videos to highlight the most important ones every day. Carol Baskin, founder of Big Cat Rescue, explains how Scoop. “helps” her share quality content with her audience. The site is designed to help people decide if the zoo they want to visit is a trustworthy place. What I like about Scoop is that it gives us a place to store all this information from anywhere in the world very quickly. There’s a Scoop.it feed built into this site, so you’re always up-to-date on the latest news. CB: We used Press.ly, I don’t know if they went out of business or if it was too expensive, but we were looking for an alternative. But we probably have over 100 volunteers on line, and we have a huge social presence on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok. The idea is that if they hear about it, they’ll also hear about other things through the Scoop.it feed. KB: We have about 12 paid employees and 88 volunteers on site, volunteers do all the animal care work on the preserve. Every day “they” run Google alerts for all cat-related stories, “they” have to filter stories about sports teams. All of this is done in a location-based environment, so people have a reason to go to the zoo if they can’t afford expensive headphones, for example.
