Matt Gaetz is an initiative that has been applauded by many people who have previously criticized the media giant for failing to keep “his” promises last year to control misinformation and other inappropriate content. Perhaps even more risky for the public perception of the company is the fact that Facebook has been blamed for many of the false messages that circulated during the 2016 elections, many of which think they may have completely changed the outcome. After “her” colleague Samantha described Marie Ware Michele as “a hell of a job”, other members of Glee’s cast joined them with their own stories. As CNBC and many others have pointed out, Facebook often serves members of its community as an “arbiter of truth” in many other ways. In our new series, we look at the news that has been in the media this week and how their reputation has changed for the better or for the worse as a result of their reaction to these events. In “his” official statement of October 2019, “he” promised, among other things, to take direct action against disinformation: “Avoid disclosure of disinformation, including clearer labels to verify the facts”. It is difficult to estimate what long-term damage this could cause to Facebook, both internally and externally, but both Zuckerberg and Facebook are in hot water. Facebook’s inability to tag or remove this content has immediately shifted much of the public’s criticism to Facebook. What is the only thing potentially worse for a company than an external reputation crisis? An internal crisis. Political action is always risky for celebrities, athletes and others who are targeted for non-political reasons. The lesson must be learned: Speak from your heart and trust your instincts when it is clear that you are on the right side of the story. Although an apology is always a necessary first step in such situations, the media circuit is still alive and new stories are emerging.
