Mary Meeker has published “her” “own” annual report on the Internet which gives marketers an overview of the global situation, including the use of social media and online advertising costs. Mary Meeker: The use of social media is stagnating around the world and mobile advertising costs continue to rise. Daily growth in social media usage, according to the annual report, is only 1% higher than last year. As shared Internet usage grows, social media usage becomes more consistent, but this does not slow down online advertising spending. The report does not provide a breakdown of advertising spending by platform, but provides an overview of the annual growth in online advertising spending for desktops and mobile phones. The number of people on the Internet continues to grow, but the use of social media remains at the same level. According to the report, there are currently 3.8 billion Internet users worldwide, 6% more than last year. Last year, this growth slowed down due to the fact that the use of social media increased by only 1% in 2018-2019. Between 2009 and 2018, the total share of Internet users increased from 24% to 51%, more than doubling in just under a decade. However, daily Internet usage on YouTube increased from 22% in 2017 to 27% in 2018.
