By focusing on the work to be done rather than the buying behavior of previous customers, you can define a wider solution space with more possibilities for innovation. It should also focus on the satisfaction of high-priority jobs and, first and foremost, on jobs that are important and unsatisfactory to the customer. This new South African Internet company, which operates a leading website where customers can evaluate a wide range of services, has performed well, but has not grown exponentially. Knowing that customers are reluctant to define the emotional outcomes they want to achieve and to provide results-based guidelines for products that do not yet exist, it is more useful to understand what these customers are trying to achieve. Designing a product that performs functional tasks in a superior manner is a necessary first step.
