All content should be part of an overall strategy, whether it is about reaching people or another business goal. This means that it is difficult to find good people who can do digital marketing and it is easier to hire an agency that has developed this expertise, often through experience rather than training. Some companies have not even claimed their Google My Business page, which they really need as part of their digital marketing strategy. In my opinion, Google tends to judge trusted experts in a particular area and not people who create high quality content. If you create great posts on social networks but don’t connect to your audience, your content is unlikely to be shared by a large number of people. For example, if you create high quality content on your site, but your site doesn’t have the authority, it’s hard to get a ranking from Google. Google Maps appears at the top of other search results, and many people stop there and don’t go to real search results like the company’s website. This is what we now see in the health sector, where traditional sites with doctor-rated content are expanding, while non-traditional sites are struggling to get into search engines, get results, and so on. Some companies feel they need content because “Google likes content” or “Google likes you to publish a lot” or something like that. I ended up working for a financial planning company that did all the digital marketing, and then worked with companies of all sizes, from small businesses to a few multi-million dollar companies. Google’s face to the SEO community, John Mueller, said that Google’s guidelines for quality testers – the document Google uses to evaluate its own algorithm – “are a guide to where SEO should go, not where it is now. “The document emphasizes the competence, authority and trust in the EMA. Google My Business is where companies manage their page on Google Maps, and for many local businesses this can be more important than their website. Interviews like the one we are conducting now are a great source of content that will help spread the message more widely as the topic and share the sponsoring company with their audience. If your brand isn’t authentic, your content won’t build the customer relationship you want, no matter how good it is.
