North Canton City schools have received permission from the five Rumfola children to share items in “their” bag, ranging from gum and lipstick to a long expired library card. According to the North Township Schools, Chas Pyle, the janitor of the North Township School, was working in the spring of 2019 when he heard a metallic noise in a hallway. “It’s really a snapshot of the life of the average socially engaged teenager,” said one of Rumfola’s girls in the North Canton City School District. “Each of their five kids has kept one of the pennies in their mother’s memory,” a North Canton City school said on Facebook. A 1957 red bag, recently discovered at an Ohio school, leaves friends and family wondering what life was like for a teenager in the 1950s. Kim Davis, a graduate of Grand Canyon University, has been writing for the Western Journal since 2015, focusing on lifestyle stories. They discovered that the bag belonged to Patti Rumfola, a Hoover High School graduate from the 1960s. Rumfola died in 2013, but her bag is a legacy and a little treasure of what it was like to be a high school student in the late 1950s. When Pyle examined the sound, he noticed that a piece of hardware that filled the space between a row of cabinets and the wall had come loose and fallen to the floor. Rumfola had been a member of the American Junior Red Cross, had a library card that expired in 1960 and a long forgotten YMCA membership. It was a red bag, a random time capsule that had remained intact for more than 60 years. Kim worked as an arts administrator for the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, writing music education programs and conducting comedies. In her shattered wallet were found a few old, discolored pennies, which her children now have as a special reminder of their mother’s adolescence. Pyle took the bag to the school office and looked in the bag with the school secretaries. She has a bachelor’s degree in music education from Grand Canyon University, with a major in tacos. He had put a picture of his friend Bonnie in the bag, and Bonnie had signed the picture with a nice message on the back.
