Buying software isn’t easy, but if done right, it can add value, connect you with colleagues and help you discover the art of change management. In my experience, the best help you can get in buying and implementing software is the team whose real experience is the software: Your IT team. You need to talk to people outside your department and often outside your company to make sure you understand the picture, what’s already happening, what’s possible and what’s needed to use the new software. For example, if your team members generally like the process and the organization, you recognize that a project will be difficult because there will be many things that will begin to be confusing or unknown. Adding more software means managing another vendor, considering another contract and another system that your employees and teammates can support. As HubSpot learning technology manager, you sometimes misbought the software. Encouraging your teammates to express their concerns can help you better define the direction of your project and create a sense of camaraderie that will help you when things get tough. It’s important to remember that you can’t make solitary decisions about software and expect everyone to like and use it. Make sure you have thought it through and that this new software is valuable enough to override these considerations. I made progress without the right technical partners, did not meet the deadline for automatic contract renewal, and made changes to my equipment without understanding how this could affect daily life. No matter what team you belong to, who your user base will be, or how many vendor demonstrations you’ve seen, these tips will put you on the right track. Depending on your business, you may also need to consider security, legal, and financial issues so they can bring their expertise and highlight their blind spots. It is important to be transparent and empathetic with your project team, your employees and the entire organisation. Here are some of my most important lessons for those who are considering buying new software or who are just curious to know more.
