Jocelyn Eason, general manager of food science and innovation at Plant and Food Research New Zealand, explains, “New packaging materials will allow many food producers to gradually and permanently move away from plastic. “Plastics have becomeone of the greatest environmental threats we face as a society,'” “she” says. “She explains that the reduction of new plastics in food packaging reflects “her” goal of building a circular economy in which no packaging becomes waste. According to an interview conducted by Ernst & Young, the professional services network of FoodNavigator. com, plastic packaging is becoming as much of an issue as the product itself. Mars, Inc. maker of M&Ms, Snickers Twix, Pedigree, Whiskas and other candy, food and feed products, is working to recycle its packaging. Henkel, a German manufacturer of chemicals and consumer products, has already launched some of its popular cosmetic brands with new eco-friendly packaging. Packaging is seen as one of the easiest ways for the brand to make a difference in sustainability. Another source, Business Monitor Online, points to Unilever’s April 2020 announcement on plastic packaging. Sustainable packaging communicates that the brand is acting responsibly. Kimberly-Clark’s range of professional disposable wipes now uses 100 percent recycled fiber for packaging. But if the packaging is not sustainable, the brand’s promise is not trustworthy. The goal is to get rid of plastic packaging. The goal is for packaging to be 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. For most brands, packaging is one of the items on their responsibility agenda. Since 2008, however, Amazon has recycled more than 665,000 tons of packaging material and more than 1.18 billion cartons. Unilever is partnering with technology to turn PET waste into recyclable packaging material. 2021 will be the year when packaging stops destroying our environment and starts making the planet sustainable.
