A new creative community, We The Culture, is also launching to showcase black creativity, while Lift Black Voices Hub will honor and celebrate “the past, present and future of black communities” throughout the month. Facebook, which has increased its support for black creators and communities over the past year, is launching a series of videos and educational programs designed to showcase black creators and their contributions to the culture in various ways. February is Black History Month, and this week major social platforms announced new programs and initiatives to celebrate Black History and highlight the contributions of people of color in commemoration. Instagram is also adding new creative tools to its Instagram feed so that users can participate in the event while organizing workshops and other events for Black makers. Given the events of the past 12 months, Black History Month takes on even greater significance in 2021, providing a platform to highlight the important contributions of Black communities to contemporary culture and development. Facebook is also launching a new four-part series on Facebook Watch to highlight black contributions to music. Facebook has also committed $10 million over two years to fund a new Black Game Development Program to help Black game developers expand their presence. It begins with a new video series called “Written By,” which will feature stories “designed to foster a conversation about how black history continues to be written in real time.” Each episode of Written By: The Future of Black Music will feature a musical icon highlighting the newcomer they believe is the future. TikTok, however, has released a new list of TikTok Black Pioneers. These features and tools will increase publicity and knowledge of the event and related discussions for all media users.
